He is not just developing players, he is teaching the right things as far as life is concerned. They are going to come out of here as men of honesty and honor.”<br />Saturday's festivities opened with Cornerstone University's varsity softball team taking on Grand Rapids Community College in an exhibition. After that, the Golden Eagles' men's soccer team took on Concordia.<br />“This is awesome,” said Doyle, 58, who played three seasons with the New York Yankees and appeared in the 1978 World Series. “I started working with Dave and this team when they were just breaking ground on this so this is a great day of celebration. The main theme here, for every student, is to impact the entire world for the cause of Jesus Christ. Cornerstone's baseball program was reborn last spring, when the Golden Eagles went 16-26 overall and 10-6 in the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference.<br />“Having a facility like this is really important to everyone, not just the students, and not just the school, but all of the community and even the surrounding communities,” Guetterman said. “It is important to support it, so we can ensure its success.”<br />The new facility already has made Mitroff's job, and that of his staff, easier.<br />“I have never seen anything like this anywhere in the country,” Mitroff said. “And it is making it easier for us. We have a national focus as well as a local one, but we had a Division I shortstop, Santino “Sonny” Mastrmatteo, who started 41 games last year (at the University of Tennessee-Martin) call us and transfer.”<br />Saturday's festivities were dampened, but only a bit, when the Golden Eagles lost to Spring Arbor.<br />“Sid and Lee are men of God who, as friends, told me what I needed to hear, not just what I wanted to hear,” Mitroff said. “Now I hope they can have the same kind of influence on these guys that they had on me."<br /><br /></div></div>

Cornerstone Rounding Third with the New Baseball Stadium

A groundbreaking ceremony on a new stadium was held Nov. 2. It’s expected to be completed in August. The Golden Eagles have recruits from New Jersey, Florida and British Columbia, along with five from Cornerstone who survived a tryout. Mitroff will also have his son, also named Dave, who will transfer from Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill. and play his last season with Cornerstone.</div><div style="line-height: 1.55em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 17px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 3px;">“It’s just a unique opportunity to play for my dad,” said the young Mitroff, a 22-year-old catcher who will convert to pitcher. “I can save money at the same time, so it just made sense.”</div><div style="line-height: 1.55em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 17px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 3px;">As the first season nears, Mitroff hopes to avoid the pitfalls of other first-year programs, such as Lourdes University, from Sylvania, Ohio. The fellow WHAC member won just one conference game and went 8-45 overall this season.</div><div style="line-height: 1.55em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 17px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 3px;">“Pitching and defense wins championships, so you have to be strong up the middle,” Mitroff said. “And I’m pretty certain we have some guys who can swing it. But like any coach, I’m concerned about pitching.”</div><div style="line-height: 1.55em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 17px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 3px;">When Mitroff isn’t on the recruiting trail, he is on campus where construction began earlier this month on the new stadium.</div><div style="line-height: 1.55em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 17px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 3px;">“I’ll be out there every day giving them doughnuts and coffee,” he said.</div><div style="line-height: 1.55em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 17px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 3px;">The stadium, located in the middle of the campus and adjacent to the soccer field, will have seating for about 500, with an outfield berm where another 1,000 can watch.</div><div style="line-height: 1.55em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 17px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 3px;">The dimensions are 325 feet along the left and right field lines and 400 feet to center.<br />It will also have lights, a clubhouse, batting cages and be covered by a Field Turf synthetic surface.</div><div style="line-height: 1.55em; margin-bottom: 0px; margin-left: 0px; margin-right: 0px; margin-top: 0px; padding-bottom: 17px; padding-left: 0px; padding-right: 0px; padding-top: 3px;">But most interesting, the stadium will be connected to two dormitories, to be built next year. Cornerstone University Gets A New Stadium

Here's the article CU released yesterday for the ceremony:</div><div><br /></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;">CORNERSTONE UNIVERSITY</div><div style="text-align: center;">BREAKS GROUND ON NEW BASEBALL STADIUM</div><div style="text-align: center;">Announces New Baseball Staff</div><br />Grand Rapids, Mich. – Cornerstone University broke ground today on its $8 million dollar one-of-its-kind baseball stadium and new residence hall combination.<div><br />Construction on the new baseball complex will begin April 1 with the first pitch being thrown out in the fall of 2012.<br /><br />“We need a new dorm and a baseball field so it will save us a footprint on campus,” said Dr. Joe Stowell, president of Cornerstone University, during chapel Nov. 2 held prior to the outdoor groundbreaking. “We needed both so we combined the two and solved the dorm issue.”</div><div><br />The new stadium will have 500 stadium seats, artificial turf, lighting, a concession stand, locker rooms for both men’s baseball and women’s softball, a training center, weight room, indoor pitching machines and indoor batting cages.<br /><br />Above the training center will be a 100 bed residence hall needed to accommodate increasing enrollment.<br /><br />Jack and Mary DeWitt of Holland, Mich., provided a gift of $5 million two months ago that will fully fund the baseball facility and provide $3 million in seed money for a new chapel and fine arts center.<div><br /><div>“Without God’s goodness and grace we wouldn’t be here,” said Jack DeWitt, owner of Request Foods. “We believe every Christian college in West Michigan should have a chapel building. Glory be to God.”</div><div><br />After the chapel service a ceremonial ground breaking took place on the field where the stadium will be located. A starting line-up of nine people wore CU jerseys and hard hats before putting their shovels in the ground.<br /><br />Head Coach David Mitroff and his team of assistants were introduced. His coaching staff includes: Ron Engle, senior assistant coach of Wyoming, Mich.; Chuck Lowitski, assistant coach of Chicago, Ill., and volunteer assistant coach Doug Smith of Sparta, Mich.<br /><br />“We’re very excited to bring baseball back to CU along with a brand new facility for the program,” said Dave Grube, athletic director for Cornerstone University. “Our goal is to provide a first class program that will honor God and represent our university with strong character and class.”</div><div><br />The DeWitts were presented with a framed home plate signed by the Cornerstone president and other staff members and a shovel with a bat handle. </div><div><br />“Mary and I share a mutual interest in and enthusiasm for the mission and vision of Cornerstone University. We are delighted to partner with the university’s leadership in the enterprise of graduating students who will influence West Michigan and our world for Christ.”</div><div><br /></div><div>The new facility will host high school tournaments, summer leagues and youth programs.
