A little inspiration from Greene and Greene

<div style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Another architect that has paved the way for <a href="http://www.visbeen.biz/">Visbeen Associates</a>?  It was actually a pair of brother architects - Charles & Henry Greene.  Their custom residences and ultimate bungalows are prime examples of the Arts & Crafts, otherwise known as Craftsman, movement.  After completing education at Washington University and MIT, and having apprenticeships at firms in Boston, Massachusettes, the brothers relocated with their family to Pasadena, California and established their firm, Greene and Greene Architects, in 1894.  Their style was distinctly Arts & Crafts influenced by Japanese architecture.  One of their most famous bungalows was the Gamble House, designed in 1908, for David & Mary Gamble, of Proctor & Gamble (check out our Architectural Tutorial on the <a href="http://visbeen-associates-architects.blogspot.com/2011/07/architectural-tutorial-craftsman-style.html">Craftsman Style</a> for more information). Much of Greene-and-Greene-designed architecture was incredibly custom, where even the light fixtures and furniture pieces were designed specifically for each space.  Here are a few of their notable works...</div><div style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK1JFyuq2loeD3lHL5Y7iZHjnUT23dcuH_QZpLMyrKjmHruuGtow3GuG6rJir1rIfR4N-y4_d9VcoddTvg7igOxIT528Tyc-TFFqQPAg_NnFuqoxU1HvwiWaLO2UJV4yVgAQGDUOwiA1NC/s1600/Vertikoff-2071031-053[1].jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="152" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjK1JFyuq2loeD3lHL5Y7iZHjnUT23dcuH_QZpLMyrKjmHruuGtow3GuG6rJir1rIfR4N-y4_d9VcoddTvg7igOxIT528Tyc-TFFqQPAg_NnFuqoxU1HvwiWaLO2UJV4yVgAQGDUOwiA1NC/s320/Vertikoff-2071031-053[1].jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><em>The Gamble House</em></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><em>Image source: </em><a href="http://www.gamblehouse.org/photos/ext/Vertikoff-2071031-053.html"><em>http://www.gamblehouse.org/photos/ext/Vertikoff-2071031-053.html</em></a></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPLyREhu6g-MeOvW8_5VY5V7ChF-_DxkaXkzFqXxsh_VU9PAJh7R4VPMnCsoZ8wIvwaI_VI6W-NiXnLZsYJkCVHBrDvIUVUMxKEPAewuIahVpheyKyY8cwGGQptBOmjE_g9yGHmCZRllcf/s1600/pratthousesm.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhPLyREhu6g-MeOvW8_5VY5V7ChF-_DxkaXkzFqXxsh_VU9PAJh7R4VPMnCsoZ8wIvwaI_VI6W-NiXnLZsYJkCVHBrDvIUVUMxKEPAewuIahVpheyKyY8cwGGQptBOmjE_g9yGHmCZRllcf/s320/pratthousesm.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: center;"><em>The Pratt House - considered "structural poetry" by Architectural Digest</em></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><em>Image source: </em><a href="http://www.ultimatebungalow.com/"><em>http://www.ultimatebungalow.com/</em></a></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtIIhSiQLbdq4qGAl4FrSW7zYxUh1R4vPWJ-J68iM_LCl46wklp-LnZi5Phtnwuc3uKCH6iXPOhw9H6H6q1yLxFBOFrlTBF-GokgTTMzE8-chPZOvMUZ_gzgQy9oAnMvYcuTf8stPNREWZ/s1600/800px-BlackerHouse_7-1-07.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="212" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjtIIhSiQLbdq4qGAl4FrSW7zYxUh1R4vPWJ-J68iM_LCl46wklp-LnZi5Phtnwuc3uKCH6iXPOhw9H6H6q1yLxFBOFrlTBF-GokgTTMzE8-chPZOvMUZ_gzgQy9oAnMvYcuTf8stPNREWZ/s320/800px-BlackerHouse_7-1-07.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><em>The Robert R. Architectural Tutorial: Craftsman Style

<div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#333333;">The Craftsman Style, otherwise known as Arts and Crafts, was based on the Arts and Crafts movement in Europe led by English architect William Morris in the early 1900s. At the time, art, furniture and residential architecture reflected the Industrial Revolution and Victorian Era, where machines introduced mass production. The Craftsman Style intended to combat this by focusing on a simpler lifestyle, centered around handcrafted elements, natural materials and straight lines, both horizontal and vertical. Built-in furniture, staircase details, stained glass windows and many other elements were constructed with the same "carved and polished wooden aesthetic" throughout the home (Walker 180).</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#333333;"><br /></span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#333333;">The most famous Craftsman architects were Charles & Henry Greene out of California. They were a major influence on the Craftsman Style spreading in the West and were best known for their bungalows. They incorporated other styles from England, Japan, Scandanavia and Switzerland into the exterior and simple interior design of their creations. They took personal interest in every aspect of their projects, designing everything from the hardware and leaded windows to built-in and movable furniture.</span></div><div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color:#333333;"><br /></span></div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLXtRWaKJ2GygJ7L7xRHDbMSERNs4HTFzWdHb-2s6ikFwKehnc6pG0wEvmRiCDcRjeZr8-YvJFZzsMWMMdihBUCUiGCLj9NQZdpx62S97a-S9GtQl_zjOAsbfBZnL9Nzk3AVLTzyBdgkjK/s1600/1-Vertikoff-2071031-32c.jpg" onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}"><img alt="" border="0" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5634471730875607042" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLXtRWaKJ2GygJ7L7xRHDbMSERNs4HTFzWdHb-2s6ikFwKehnc6pG0wEvmRiCDcRjeZr8-YvJFZzsMWMMdihBUCUiGCLj9NQZdpx62S97a-S9GtQl_zjOAsbfBZnL9Nzk3AVLTzyBdgkjK/s320/1-Vertikoff-2071031-32c.jpg" style="display:block;
